2 20PL83 impor t ant ser vice safety preca ution ? ser vice w ork should be perf ormed onl y b y qualified service tec hnicians who are thor oughl y familiar with all saf ety c hec ks and the servicing guidelines whic h f ollo w: x-radia tion and high v ol t a ge limits 1 . be sure all ser vice personnel are a w are of the procedures and instr uctions co v ering x-r adiation. the only potential source of x-r a y in current solid state tv receiv ers is the picture tube . ho we v er , the picture tube does not emit measur ab le x-ra y r adiation, if the high v oltage is as specified in the "high v oltage chec k" instr uctions . it is only when high v oltage is e xcessiv e that x- r adiation is capab le of penetr ating the shell of the picture tube including the lead in the glass mater ial. the impor tant precaution is to k eep the high v oltage belo w the maxim um le v el specified. 2. it is essential that ser vicemen ha v e a v ailab le at all times an accur ate high v oltage meter . the calibr ation of this meter should be chec k ed per iodically . 3. high v oltage should alw a ys be k ept at the r ated v alue ? no higher . oper ation at higher v oltages ma y cause a f ailure of the picture tube or high v oltage circuitr y and;also , under cer tain conditions , ma y produce r adiation in e xceeding of desir ab le le v els . 4. when the high v oltage regulator is oper ating proper ly there is no possibility of an x-r adiation prob lem. ev er y time a color chassis is ser viced, the br ightness should be tested while monitor ing the high v oltage with a meter to be cer tain that the high v oltage does not e xceed the specified v alue and that it is regulating correctly . 5. do not use a picture tube other than that specified or mak e unrecommended circuit modifications to the high v oltage circuitr y . 6 . when troub le shooting and taking test measurements on a receiv er with e xcessiv e high v oltage , a v oid being unnecessar ily close to the receiv er . do not operate the receiver longer than is necessary to locate the cause of excessive voltage. w arning 1. f or contin ued saf ety , no modification of an y circuit should be attempted. 2. disconnect a c po w er bef ore ser vicing. 3 . semiconductor heat sinks are potential shoc k hazards when the chassis is oper ating. 4. the chassis in this receiv er has tw o ground systems which are separ ated b y insulating mater ial. the non- isolated (hot) g round system is f or the b+ v oltage regulator circuit and the hor iz ontal output circuit. the isolated g round system is f or the lo w b+ dc v oltages and the secondar y circuit of the high v oltage tr ansf or mer . t o pre v ent electr ical shoc k use an isolation transf or mer betw een the line cord and po w er receptacle , when ser vicing this chassis . ser vicing of high v ol t a ge system and picture tube when servicing the high v olta ge system, remo ve the static c har g e b y connecting a 10k ohm resistor in series with an insulated wire (suc h as a test pr obe) between the pic- ture tube gr ound and the anode lead. (a c line cor d should be disconnected fr om a c outlet.) 1 . picture tube in this receiv er emplo ys integr al implosion protection. 2 . replace with tube of the same type n umber f or contin ued saf ety . 3. do not lift picture tube b y the nec k. 4 . handle the picture tube only when w ear ing shatter proof goggles and after discharging the high v oltage anode completely .

" and shaded areas in the replacement parts lists and schematic diagrams. impor t ant ser vice safety preca ution (contin ued) 1. inspect all lead dress to mak e cer tain that leads are not pinched or that hardw are is not lodged between the chassis and other metal par ts in the receiv er . 2. inspect all protectiv e de vices such as non-metallic control knobs , insulating mater ials , cabinet bac ks , adjustment and compar tment co v ers or shields , isolation resistor-capacity netw or ks , mechanical insulators and etc. 3. t o be sure that no shoc k hazard e xists , chec k f or leakage current in the f ollo wing manner . ? plug the a c cord directly into a 110~220 v olt a c outlet, (do not use an isolation tr ansf or mer f or this test). ? using two clip leads , connect a 1.5k ohm, 10 w att resistor paralleled b y a 0.15 f capacitor in ser ies with all e xposed metal cabinet par ts and a kno wn ear th g round, such as electr ical conduit or electr ical g round connected to ear th g round. ? use an a c v oltmeter ha ving with 5000 ohm per v olt, or higher , sensitivity to measure the a c v oltage drop across the resistor . 1.5k ohm 10w 0.15 f test pr obe t o exposed met al p ar ts connect t o kno wn ear th gr ound f or contin ued protection, replacement par ts m ust be identical to those used in the or iginal circuit. the use of substitute replacement par ts which do not ha v e the same saf ety char acter istics as the f actor y recommended replacement par ts sho wn in this ser vice man ual, ma y create shoc k, fire , x-r adiation or other hazards . before returning the receiver (fire & shoc k hazar d) bef ore returning the receiver to the user , perf orm the f ollo wing saf ety c hec ks. ? connect the resistor connection to all e xposed metal par ts ha ving a retur n to the chassis (antenna, metal cabinet, scre w heads , knobs and control shafts , escutcheon and etc.) and measure the a c v oltage drop across the resistor . aii chec ks m ust be repeated with the a c ine cord plug connection re v ersed. (if necessar y , a non- polar iz ed adapter plug m ust be used only f or the pur pose of completing these chec k.) an y current measured m ust not e xceed 0.5 milliamp . an y measurements not within the limits outlined abo v e indicate of a potential shoc k hazard and correctiv e action m ust be tak en bef ore retur ning the instr ument to the customer .

5 20PL83 circuit pr o tection the receiver is pr otected b y a 3.15a fuse (f701), mounted on pwb-a, wired into one side of the a c line input. +b dc regula t or confirma tion the + b dc output v olta g e adjustment is not inc luded in this cir cuit.ho we ver , should confirmation be reguired pr oceed as f ollo ws. 1. actuate receiv er with 220v a c input v oltage . 2. receiv e a local channel. 3. connect positiv e lead of digital v oltmeter to c754 positiv e side on pwb-a ; negativ e lead to chassis ground. 4. confir m this v oltage reading is as belo w . ca ution: the reading should be within +130.0 ?2.0v dc to ensure nor mal function and circuitr y reliability . x-radia tion pr o tect or circuit test after ser vice has been perf ormed on the horizontal deflection system, high v olta g e system, b+ system, test the x-radiation pr otection cir cuit to ascer tain pr oper operation as f ollo ws: 1 . apply 220v a c using a v ar iac tr ansf or mer f or accur ate input v oltage . 2. allo w f or w ar m up and adjust all customer controls f or nor mal picture and sound. 3. receiv e a good local channel. 4. connect a digital v oltmeter to tp653 and mak e sure that the v oltmeter reads 21.4 ?1.5 v . 5 . apply e xter nal 27.9v dc at tp653 b y using an e xter nal dc supply , tv must be shut off . 6. t o reset the protector , unplug the a c cord and mak e a shor t circuit betw een tp651 and tp652. no w mak e sure that nor mal picture appears on the screen. 7. if the oper ation of the hor iz ontal oscillator does not stop in step 5, the circuit must be repaired bef ore the set is retur ned to the customer . high v ol t a ge check high v olta g e is not adjustab le b ut m ust be c hec ked to verify that the receiver is operating within saf e and efficient design limitations as specified c hec ks should be as f ollo ws: 1. connect an accur ate high v oltage meter betw een ground and anode of picture tube . 2. oper ate receiv er f or at least 15 min utes at 110~220v a c line v oltage , with a strong air signal or a proper ly tuned in test signal. 3. rece v e a good local channel. 4 . the v oltage should be appro ximately , 25.5kv (at pictuer max br ight center condition). if a correct reading cannot be obtained, check circuitry for malfunctioning components. inst alla tion and ser vice instr uctions note: (1) when perf orming an y adjustments to resistor contr ols and transf ormer s use non-metallic scre wdriver s or tv alignment tools. (2) bef ore perf orming adjustments, the tv set m ust be on at least 15 min utes.
6 20PL83 for adjustments of this model, the b us data is con ver ted to v arious analog signals b y the d/a con ver ter cir cuit. note: there are still a few analog adjustments in this series such as focus and master screen voltage. follow the steps below whenever the service adjustment is required. see "table-b" to determine, if serv- ice adjustments are required. 1. ser vice mode bef ore putting unit into the ser vice mode , chec k that customer adjustments are in the nor mal mode . use the reset function in the video adjustment men u to ensure customer controls are in their proper (reset) position. 2. ser vice item selection once in the ser vice mode , press the ch-up or ch- do wn b utton on the remote controller or at the set. the ser vice adjustment item will v ar y in increments of one . select the item y ou wish to adjust. 3. data n umber selection press the v ol-up or do wn b utton to adjust the data number . t o enter the ser vice mode and e xit ser v- ice mode . shor t j a137&j a138 f or 1 second and release to s witch to the ser vice mode position, and the microprocessor is in input mode .(adjustment through the i 2 c b us control.) to exit the service mode, turn the television off by pressing the power button. 25 a gc: d a t a number ser vice adjustment item figure a.
